Oil on prepared paper on board. Across the northern hemisphere many schools and universities start their academic year in September. In western astrology and astronomy, most of September sits in the sign of Virgo. For astrologers the positive traits of Virgo include a love of learning and teaching, discrimination between meaningful and trivial, a will to work for the greater good, industriousness and efficiency. Late September is the beginning of the time of Demeter and her daughter Persephone. Pre-dating the Olympian Gods, they bring the harvest and therefore nourishment and survival to the people. Reaping only comes after the hard work of planting and nurturing.
